Young innovators from across Te Tauihu took to the stage last week for the region's first RoboCup Junior Theatre Competition, with 13 teams presenting original robot-powered performances that combined technology, storytelling, engineering, and the arts.Unlike traditional robotics competitions, the RoboCup Jr Theatre division requires students to create a complete theatrical production. Teams write their own scripts, design costumes and props, build and programme autonomous robots, and choreograph performances that tell a story through a combination of robotics and creative expression. The competition was the culmination of months of classroom learning, during which students developed skills in coding, engineering, design, collaboration, and problem-solving. The free classroom programme was made possible through funding from Network Tasman Trust, while TechStep helped create a Te Tauihu Loaner Bot Programme to ensure schools could access robotics equipment regardless of their resources. The event is part of RoboCup Junior New Zealand, a national robotics and STEM programme engaging young people aged 7–18 which Ministry of Inspiration has only just begun delivering last year. MOI hopes to grow this programme to match our NZAquaBot delivery levels by 2027. Ministry of Inspiration’s Chief Inspiration Officer, Amy Cornelisen says the Theatre division is particularly powerful because it brings together technical and creative skills. "Students aren't just learning to code robots. They're writing stories, creating costumes and sets, solving technical challenges, and learning how to work as a team. It shows that STEM and creativity go hand in hand."The success of the inaugural Te Tauihu Theatre Competition highlights the growing enthusiasm for robotics education in the region and reflects a broader goal of helping young people become creators of technology rather than simply consumers of it.Congratulations to the winnings schools-Dovedale, Lower Moutere, and Renwick!
