What a fun thing to do this weekend!

No RSVPs required for this field trip.Field Trip details: Our first NDG meeting for 2025 will be an afternoon geological field trip, led by Dr Greg Browne, to the Rocks Road foreshore. We will examine the Magazine Point Formation where it is exposed on the shore platform adjacent to State Highway 6 just north of Tahunanui Beach, Nelson. The trip will concentrate on the sedimentology of these rocks, how they were deposited, the sedimentary structures displayed as well as an opportunity to examine fossils contained within them. Hochstetter and Haast visited these rocks in August 1859, and they were one of the first locations in New Zealand where fossils were collected and described. The second part of the trip might be best described as "a day in the life of a sedimentologist." We'll do some hands-on activity, measuring and drawing a stratigraphic column using a variety of measuring techniques. For this we'll break into groups. Participants should bring a notebook for writing, and a 5 or 8 m tape measure for that activity if they have one.
